Soon after, Sweeny became a staff designer and illustrator for The Detroit News where she began to receive national recognition and was honored to have her 1992 illustration of Paul Simon be selected as part of the Library of Congress exhibition “Timely and Timeless,” which celebrated American comic art, social and political satire, and caricature.

She also illustrated the cover for the book, “The Hammer Comes Down,” a biography of former Congressman Tom DeLay.
As a frequent contributor to Time, Sweeny drew the semi-regular Cartoon feature on the news magazine’s back page as well as caricatures of politicians and business leaders for the its Spotlight page. She illustrated the March 6, 1995 cover for Time International.
